Hotels in Milan near Duomo: Discover STRAF Hotel

Hotels in Milan near Duomo

If you’re looking for hotels in Milan near Duomo, STRAF combines an unbeatable central location with one of the city’s most distinctive approaches to contemporary design.

Finding a hotel in the very centre of Milan is easy. Finding one that doesn’t feel like it could be in any other city is rather more interesting.

Just steps from Piazza del Duomo, on the narrow Via San Raffaele between the Cathedral and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, STRAF Hotel is one of Milan’s original design hotels. Opened in 2004 and designed by Italian architect and artist Vincenzo De Cotiis, it was conceived not simply as somewhere to stay, but as an immersive design project.

More than twenty years later, that identity still sets it apart.

An unconventional design hotel in the heart of Milan

STRAF occupies a historic building whose interiors were radically reimagined by Vincenzo De Cotiis.

Rather than relying on the marble, polished surfaces and decorative opulence often associated with luxury hotels, De Cotiis took a deliberately unconventional approach. Concrete, slate, burnished brass, iron, distressed glass and aged mirrors appear throughout the interiors, alongside bespoke furniture and artworks.

The result is minimalist without being anonymous and industrial without feeling cold. Rough surfaces and deliberately imperfect finishes sit alongside softer elements, creating rooms that feel more like individual design spaces than conventional hotel interiors.

There is also an element of Arte Povera in the hotel’s visual language, with humble and industrial materials elevated through unexpected combinations and careful craftsmanship.

It is a particularly Milanese idea of luxury: design takes precedence over decoration.

Rooms designed as individual spaces

STRAF’s rooms and suites continue the same design vocabulary, but no two feel entirely identical.

Concrete and slate floors, brass details, scratched glass and custom-made furnishings are recurring elements, while original works by De Cotiis add colour and texture. The interiors are intentionally pared back, with an emphasis on materials rather than ornament.

Room categories range from compact Single and Standard rooms to Superior and Deluxe rooms, as well as terrace suites. Deluxe rooms add details such as massage chairs and light therapy, while selected suites offer private terraces overlooking the centre of Milan.

Despite the hotel’s experimental aesthetic, the rooms include the practical comforts expected of a contemporary city hotel, including Wi-Fi, air conditioning, tea and coffee facilities and Bluetooth speakers.

A few steps from the Duomo

For visitors prioritising location, STRAF has a considerable advantage.

The hotel is on Via San Raffaele, just off Piazza del Duomo. Milan Cathedral, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and La Rinascente are practically on the doorstep, while Teatro alla Scala, Via Montenapoleone and the streets of the Quadrilatero della Moda are within easy walking distance.

Brera is also easily reached on foot, making STRAF a particularly convenient base for a first visit to Milan or for a short stay when you want to spend as little time as possible travelling across the city.

And unlike many centrally located hotels, STRAF doesn’t retreat completely from its surroundings. Its bar has long been part of the life of the neighbourhood rather than simply an amenity reserved for hotel guests.

STRAF Bar: aperitivo with the Duomo next door

With concrete, iron, vintage furniture and works by De Cotiis, the interior continues the visual language of the hotel, while the outdoor area places you right in the middle of central Milan, with the Duomo only metres away.

Open throughout the day, the bar becomes livelier towards evening, with aperitivo, DJ sets and live music contributing to a relaxed, international atmosphere.

It is one of the details that makes STRAF feel connected to Milan rather than insulated from it: locals come here too.

The hotel also has a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, offering a quieter alternative to the energy of the bar.

H2O Wellness Boutique

Hidden beneath the hotel is H2O Wellness Boutique, a compact wellness area designed as a counterpoint to the noise and movement of central Milan.

The space includes a pool with counter-current swimming and hydromassage, sauna, steam room and relaxation area. Once again, De Cotiis’s choice of materials plays a central role: white quartz, dark granite, plaster, brass and steel create an atmospheric interior based on contrasts, reflections and water.

After several hours spent walking around Milan — which has an extraordinary ability to turn “I’ll just have a quick look around” into 18,000 steps — it is not an entirely unwelcome feature.

STRAFhub: a space for contemporary culture

STRAF has always positioned itself at the intersection of hospitality, art and design, and in recent years this side of the hotel has developed further through STRAFhub.

Created for the hotel’s twentieth anniversary, STRAFhub is a cultural initiative dedicated to contemporary creativity. Its projects have included literature, photography and exhibitions staged within the hotel itself, reinforcing an idea that was already present when STRAF opened: the hotel as a place that can be used, explored and experienced rather than simply slept in.

It makes particular sense in Milan, a city where the boundaries between hospitality, fashion, architecture and design have a habit of becoming rather blurred.

Is STRAF one of the best hotels in Milan near Duomo?

That depends on what you want from a hotel.

If your idea of luxury involves chandeliers, acres of marble and classically elegant interiors, STRAF probably isn’t the obvious choice.

If, on the other hand, you appreciate contemporary architecture, experimental materials and hotels with a strong visual identity, it deserves a place on your shortlist.

For design-conscious travellers looking for the best hotels in Milan near Duomo, STRAF offers something genuinely different: an exceptionally central base that also happens to be a longstanding Milan design project.
