Lisa Corti’s shop in Milan ‒ known as Home Textile Emporium ‒ is truly a temple of wonders for decorating your home. Here, you’ll find the most amazing home textiles, tablecloths, cushions, but also large square-shaped fabrics (called “mezzeri”), bedspreads, curtains, tapestries and really gorgeous vases. Anything to spruce up your home, with a twist.
You’ll also find a wide range of women’s clothing, kurtas (one of the most traditional forms of Indian dressing), kaftans, jackets and bags, as well as clothing for men and children.
When designing her creations, when choosing colours and materials, Lisa Corti ‒ who lived in Ethiopia until the age of 19 ‒ has drawn inspiration mostly from the years she spent in Africa but also from her travels in India, a land of bright colours and unforgettable landscapes.
And that’s not all, because European art has also tickled Lisa’s imagination and creativity. An example? A Florentine fresco dating back to 1459 and located in the Chapel of the Magi in Florence, and a tapestry in Aubusson in France, which inspired two of her most iconic designs.
Lisa Corti’s distinctive and unique fabrics are conceived and designed in Milan, but they’re produced in India with ancient artisanal techniques such as “block printing”. This is a very old art of printing on wood originated in India in the 16th Century. What does it consist of? Each carving of the mould corresponds to a colour. After dipping it in pigment, the carving is pressed onto the fabric, one colour at a time. By doing so, each fabric is the result of many layers and each print is unique (and the small imperfections you may find are precisely a guarantee of its uniqueness).
The company is now run by Lisa Corti’s daughter, Ida, who travelled to India with her mother when she was very young, and who now also contributes to the design of the fabrics.
Lisa Corti’s shop in Milan is much more than “just” a home decor store: it is also a workshop of ideas and creativity with sales areas, sewing machines and drawing tables.
